AI Adoption Survey: How Scottish SMEs Are Really Using AI

We recently commissioned a survey of 500 Scottish SMEs to find out how AI is actually being used day to day, not just talked about. The results paint a clear picture: businesses that have adopted AI are seeing real gains in productivity, profitability and competitiveness, even if it hasn't translated into more hiring just yet.

An incredible 72% of businesses said AI had made them somewhat or much more productive. Almost half reported higher profits since adopting it, and a similar number said it's made them more competitive.

Marketing and sales came out as the most common use case, followed by data analysis and reporting, with cybersecurity, finance and customer service chatbots also featuring. The benefits were most pronounced in professional services firms, which tracks with what we're seeing across our own client base in Ayrshire and Glasgow.

It's not all smooth sailing though. Cybersecurity risk and data privacy were the top concerns businesses raised, and only 1 in 10 said they'd actually invested in AI security training. That's a very meaningful gap. Businesses are rolling AI into marketing, finance and customer-facing roles faster than they're putting safeguards around it. Skills gaps came up a lot too, with businesses telling us they struggled to know which tools were right for them or how to measure the return.

Our managing director, Iain Wham, put it well: "While the survey findings suggest Scottish SMEs are crossing an important threshold in AI adoption, they also reveal that most businesses are still using the technology in a relatively light-touch way, rather than embedding it deeply across operations. The gap between those using AI well and those still finding their feet is widening, and as the technology evolves, businesses that treat AI as a core capability rather than a low-cost experiment will likely pull further ahead."
